At the 24-hours race at the Nürburgring, for the first time FEV supplied a successful racing team with sustainable fuel. ‘eFuel Racing 98’ is a renewable fuel that is produced by the DeCarTrans project led by FEV.

BMW M4 GT4: 2nd place for Bonk Motorsport

The ‘eFuel Racing 98’-powered BMW M4 GT4 (starting number 888) took the lead in its starting group right at the beginning of the race. The team with drivers Martin Kroll, Max Partl, Michael Schrey and Jörg Weidinger led the class classification for a long time. Even after a change in the lead, the Bonk drivers remained constantly on the heels of the new leader and made several attempts to recapture the top position.

Due to extremely dense fog, however, the race was interrupted shortly after 11 p.m. and could not be restarted on Sunday due to poor visibility. As a result, Team Bonk Motorsport finished in an excellent second place in the AT3 class.

eFuel Racing 98: Operation with carbon-neutral high-performance fuel

The race result confirms the findings of the test bench trials carried out by project partners FEV, Bertrandt and Bonk Motorsport in the run-up to the race: Renewable fuels are on a par with fossil fuels in terms of their performance while emitting significantly less CO2 and other pollutants.

The use of the renewable ‘eFuel Racing 98’ enabled a CO2 neutral participation in the Nürburgring 24 hours, as the production of the renewable fuel removes the same amount of CO2 from the atmosphere as the vehicle emits during operation.

After the training sessions prior to the race, the drivers also confirmed that they didn’t notice any difference in performance when using ‘eFuel Racing 98’, the only difference to the fossil fuel being the smell.

DeCarTrans project aims to further develop a process for the production of synthetic gasoline from methanol derived from renewable sources. Synthetic fuels could significantly reduce emissions of pollutants. Methanol is particularly suitable as it can be produced and imported relatively easily in large quantities.
